Abstract

Aiming at studying the low-temperature friction characteristics of strand materials, a self-developed small-angle contact type low-temperature friction test device for strand materials was used to carry out cyclic friction tests on 0.81 mm copper wires under normal temperature and low temperature media. Results showed that the roughness of the material surface gradually decreased during the cyclic friction process, and the friction force gradually decreased as the number of cycles increased, especially in the low-temperature medium. The wear surface was observed by scanning electron microscope, which presented that there were abrasive particles on the friction area. With adjusting the loading path, it could be found that the elimination of some abrasive particles at room temperature could effectively improve the friction force, and the impact on the vibration amplitude of the friction force over time was not obvious, which would be the opposite in low temperature medium.Besides, through theoretical modeling, the Mises yield criterion was used to analyze the mechanism of cyclic friction.Because the boundary of the overlapping part of the friction pair in cyclic friction was subjected to alternating tensile stress and compressive stress, thus, the loss part(overlapping amount)became abrasive particles in the friction area.
