Microetching Effect of Environmentally Friendly Ternary System Containing Manganese upon Polypropylene Plastic Surface

Abstract

The environmentally friendly ternary microetching system of MnO2-H2SO4-H2O was employed to microetch the surface of polypropylene plastic (PP) matrix, in order to provide reasonable conditions for subsequent electroless copper plating and electrocoppering. The surface morphology of PP matrix before and after microetching was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM), the hydrophilicity of PP matrix surface was measured by surface contact angle meter, and the adhesive strength between PP matrix and copper coating film was measured by 90 ° peel method. Furthermore, the influence of microetching treatment on the surface morphology, hydrophilicity and adhesive strength of PP matrix was analyzed to determine the reasonable microetching treatment conditions of PP matrix. Results showed that under the conditions of a microetching temperature of 80 ℃, a MnO2 content in microetching solution of 80 g/L, VH2SO4 VH2O =3.0 ∶1.0, and a microetching time of 100 min, the surface microetching effect of PP matrix was good. After a microetching at a temperature of 80 oC, the surface contact angle of PP matrix was reduced from 91.7° to 62.6° and the surface hydrophilicity was improved;many uniform and compact micropores appeared on the surface of PP matrix; and the adhesive strength between the copper coating and PP matrix reached 3.5 N/cm, indicating that the adhesive strength was significantly improved. Therefore, the MnO2-H2SO4-H2O system was an environmentally friendly effective microetching system for the PP surface.
