Abstract

In this study, the failure analysis of a process pipeline in a drainage and gas extraction well site was conducted to identify the causes of the pipeline failure.Macroscopic inspection, chemical composition analysis, metallurgical examination, microscopic characterization of corrosion products and other methods were used, focusing on the analysis of the material properties, corrosion process and mechanism of the pipeline. Results showed that the material properties of the pipeline body and the weld were significantly different. The surface products of the pipeline were primarily CaCO3, FeCO3, Cu and Cu2O.Three forms of damage, including pitting corrosion, erosion and under-deposit corrosion, were experienced by the pipeline. The failure was mainly caused by the preferential electrochemical corrosion of the weld in acidic medium containing CO2, Cl and high temperature environment, as well as the significant erosion corrosion at the outer arc side of the elbow at high flow rate, and under-deposit corrosion occurred in the straight sections of the pipe, which were susceptible to scale, resulting in the preferential perforation and leakage at the weld and the outer arc side of the elbow. It is suggested that non-destructive testing be carried out on the weld and elbow of the process pipeline at similar drainage and gas extraction well sites. When pipe sections with serious corrosion were found, they should be replaced promptly. At the same time, the monitoring of the welding quality of the new pipeline should be strengthened.
